Mechanized Avalanche Courses
In recent years the number of snowmobilers in the backcountry has grown exponentially. However the availability of backcountry safety and rescue courses specific to this group has not. The only option left to sledders has been to strap on a pair of snow shoes and slog through an avalanche course with a group of skiers. Although the snow science information is excellent, there are huge gaps in the curriculum which are snowmobiling specific. Sleds are bigger, and they travel further faster than any other means of backcountry travel.
We at WAC have taken this into account. Our four step Avalanche Safety Initiative Program (ASIP) has been designed by sledders for sledders. This set of interactive seminars and intensive field sessions takes into account all of the aspects of backcountry snowmobile travel, from fast terrain recognition to snow stability testing using the weight of your sled.
All of our courses are instructed by experienced sledders with a minimum of three years experience in mountain rescue and avalanche safety.
Avalanche Safety Initiative Program (ASIP):
Step 1: Avalanche Awareness Seminar
This four hour avalanche awareness program is aimed at making people aware of the various dangers in traveling in the back country. This will involve an inside seminar. The Group or Business will have to arrange the meeting area as well as advertising of the session. We have found this to be a great way to start the season and to bring prospective clients or members together.
At this seminar the club is encouraged to take names for Step 2.
Step 2: Avalanche Awareness Field Seminar
Pre requisite: none
After the initial seminar has peaked your or clubs interest, they will be ready for step 2. This is a two day 8 hr event, with a 4 hour intensive classroom session and 4hr field session. This session will cover safe travel, safety and rescue as well as snow stability testing. The group size for the field seminar is no more that 1 to 10 instructor to student ratio. The beauty of this set up is that we can accommodate up to 90 people without a problem. On top of this everyone will be able to enjoy sledding for the rest of the time that they are not training. The minimum amount of people needed is 10.
Step 3: CAA AST Course
Prerequisite: none
At this point we bring our students into the two day Canadian Avalanche Association (CAA) Avalanche Skills Training course for snowmobilers (AST). This is a 16 hour course with a formal and set format. After this step the student at this point has achieved what the CAA feels as appropriate level of basic understanding for backcountry travel.
Step 4: Advanced AST
Prerequisite: CAA AST
This, the final step in the program is the CAA formatted Advanced Recreational Avalanche Course. This four day course is intended for people who have a serious interest in avalanches and their theory.
The ARAC program will expand upon the topics taught in the AST course, but in a wilderness avalanche terrain setting. The head instructor of this course, a CAA level II Avalanche Forecaster will walk people through the ins and outs of large feature terrain assessment, understanding snow stability, weather, avalanche formation, and affecting a backcountry rescue.
All participants must display adequate use of their personal rescue equipment prior to commencement of course.
Prices:
Step 1: Avalanche Awareness Seminar: $450.00 per group.
Step 2: Avalanche Awareness Field Seminar: $ 135.00 per persons.
Step 3: CAA AST Course: $210.00 per person.
